The game play takes place in an open world. Completing missions provides one with rewards which can be used to upgrade cars and buy new ones. In addition to the story missions, one can also take on the optional missions. These optional missions are varying in nature. Some demand the player to jump his car for a long distance while others require setting a speed record while keeping the tires on the road. Some missions consist of hitting targets that are put around the track. To sum up, these optional missions provide a break from the serious and straining missions. The story missions are classed according to the type of vehicles used in them. These are Dirt, Street, Raid, Performance and Circuit. Only the car given at the beginning of the game can be used for all of the missions.
The credit for composing the soundtrack goes to Joseph Trapnese. There are two expansion packs to the game, both of which were released after the game’s initial release. ‘The Crew: Wild Run’ is the first expansion pack and was released on November 17, 2015. This expansion pack supports the platforms of Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It was developed by Ivory Tower and was published by Ubisoft. The expansion pack brings a lot of additional content to the game. Motorcycles, a new multiplayer event, new car and new car specifications are introduced through the package. A graphical Overhaul was also released for all the players regardless of whether they own the package. The second expansion pack to the game is called ‘The Crew: Calling All Units’. It was released on November 29, 2018 for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The ‘Ultimate Edition’ was also released on the same date and combined the game with both the expansion packs. In the second expansion package, the players get to play the role of a police officer whose aim is to arrest illegal street racers and smugglers. While doing this, the players are given access to Police equipment and a variety of cars.
The Single player missions take 20 hours to complete. Other than this, there are mini challenges which can be taken on. The multiplayer mode supports a total of 8 multiplayers to play online. The players are allowed to custom build cars through the apps at iOS and Androids. The games require a constant internet connection to play regardless of whether the player is playing alone. The physics model used in the game is not the most realistic and can prove to a nuisance for some. It can also prove to be quite unpredictable and humorous.
Despite of its fair share of flaws, The Crew manages to provide a solid game play for the thrill seekers. For the gaming enthusiasts who appreciate the open world concept, this game succeeds in proving its mettle.
