The development credit for the game goes to Eden Games and Atari Melbourne House. The game was officially published by Atari. The game play takes place in an open world. The area is based on the satellite map of a Hawaiian island, Oahu. Although said to be an exact replica of the original place, the island is missing some important landmarks and highways. The terrain of the place varies from rainforests and mountains to sandy beaches. The player has the freedom to roam freely in the game, without any restrictions in regard to the tracks. A total of 90 licensed cars are featured in the game in addition to various motorbikes. The game starts with the player purchasing a car and a house on the island. He then gets the freedom to wander through the island. The challenges which are completed yield to money, coupons and more challenges. Coupons can be used to buy clothing merchandise for the character while money is usually there for the upgrades and customization of the car. The customization is done through the actual catalogues of the manufacturers. All the challenges in the single player mode can be played in the multiplayer mode too. In addition to this, some challenges are present for the multiplayer mode exclusively. Customized games are also available. These games can be uploaded online too.
There are a number of Downloadable Content Packages which can be downloaded or purchased online. For the Xbox version of the game, a total of 8 packages with 8 additional cars are available. Some of these can be downloaded free while others have to be purchased with Microsoft points. In the game, this additional content has to be bought with in-game money, so basically these cars have to be unlocked first. ‘Hardcore mode’ is another Downloadable Content which makes the game’s experience a tad more realistic.
