The game is the seventeenth installment in the popular ‘Need for Speed’ franchise and proves to be a direct sequel to the 2009 game, Need for Speed: Shift. The game was developed by Slightly Mad Studios; with the iOS version of the game being developed by Straight Right. Shift 2: Unleashed was published by Electronic Arts for the platforms of Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and iOS. All of these versions were released on different dates of March and April of 2011. The mentioned game managed to score generally positive critique upon its release. Eurogame rated the game with a score of 8 out of a possible 10 while IGN.com gave the game a score of 8.5 out of 10. GameSpot gave the game a 7.5 put of 10. The game play takes place on real life circuits that exceed 60 in number. These circuits span from Barcelona to Tokyo. A wide array of race modes is featured in the game. The Autolog feature is seen to make a return in this installment. It allows for the players to compete against other players in terms of performance. The comparison makes it possible for one to see the fastest time and highest score of the players. In this game, the Autolog feature recommends the vehicles that the other players have used to score spectacular scores. The number of Badges earned by each player is also tracked and displayed through the Autolog. The game supports single player mode and online multiplayer mode alike. The split screen multiplayer option, unfortunately, is not supported by Shift 2: Unleash. An addition to the game is the view through the helmet which provides a shaky but accurate description of the visuals.
Two Downloadable Content Packages of the game were released. The Legends Pack was released on 26th April, 2011 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation3. Its total cost was 800 Microsoft Points. This pack added 5 new courses and 13 cars to the game. The additional cars included the 1968 Alfa Romeo GTA 1600, the 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL, the 1973 Porsche 911Carrera RSR 3.0 and the 1964 Shelby Daytona among others. The other DLC pack is called the Speedhunters Pack. It was released on 17th May 2011 for the platforms of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. This package saw to the addition of 6 new drag race courses and a total of 14 tuned cars. These included Toyota Supra, Pagani Huayra, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, McLaren MP4 12C and many others. The additional showcased courses consist of the Miyatomi Drag Strip, the Miyatomi Mile, the Agueda Drag Strip, the Agueda Aerostrome, the Nevada Drag Strip and the Nevada Freight Yard. A total of 140 cars are featured in the game and these are all licensed.
