The basis for this game is the isiMotor 2 engine. The simulator has acquired much praise from its critics. Steam rated this computer game as 9/10 while GameRankings gave it an aggregate score of 86%. A sequel named ‘rFactor 2’ was announced in 2009 by Image Space Incorporated.

The game showcases two classes of vehicles which are ‘Open Wheel Challenge’ vehicles and Sedan cars. The open wheel challengers range from F-3 to F-1 like cars. The sedan cars span from a compact but sporty built and includes cars which are BMW like. Also included are US Muscle cars and Stock cars. The BMW Sauber F1.07 Formula One was added to the game in 2006. This was done in deal with Intel. The 2007 and 2008 versions of this car were added to the game as ad ons. The facilities consist of the Orchard lake which is an oval and a road course; Mills Metropark and Toban raceway which are both road course; Jonesville runabout which is also an oval; and Sardian Heights which features a street race in a city environment. The later updates of the game added a layout to the Sardian Heights. Essington Park, Leinz and Jacksonville were added. A number of real world tracks were added to the game in 2006 under fictitious names. These included Barcelona, which was based on Circuit de Catalunya; Brianza based on Autodromo Nazionale Monza; Northamptonshire which was inspired from Silverstone Circuit and lastly Nuerburg which was based upon Nurburgring.
