It is a sequel to the much popular ‘Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed’. Need for Speed II was released in Japan under the name ‘Over Drivin’ II’. It was published by Electronic Arts on the platform of Playstation and Microsoft Windows. Said game was developed by EA Canada and is an installment of the most successful racing video game series in the world. IGN.com has rated this game as 6.0/10 while Gamespot gave it a rating of 7.0/10. A special edition of Need for Speed II was released in United States, Japan and Europe which included certain extra features. A 3D acceleration mode was also featured in this special edition. This installment in the series had generally mixed reviews and it is said that it was not at par with its predecessor.
The game features 8 exotic cars plus 4 bonus cars, some of which can be unlocked after certain achievements. Of these, some are original sports cars while others are concept cars. The tracks, although inspired from original locations from around the world, are aggrandized for a lush experience. The tracks comprise of both easy and technical tracks which range in difficulty. These tracks do not have any shortcuts or alternate paths which proves to be a nuisance for some players.

Two playing styles are available for Need for Speed II which are Arcade and Simulation. Arcade is found easy to control by the players while Simulation is generally felt to be strained. In addition to this, three game playing modes are also featured here. Single Race mode is a straightforward racing mode in which the number of laps and opponents can be customized. Tournament mode consists of a multitude of single race events which must be won to unlock one of the bonus cars. The Knockout mode, as the name suggests, consists of a race of two laps in which the runner up is eliminated from the competition. A total of 8 opponents are playing in this mode.

An addition to the previous installment of this game is the customizable things which include the car paint, the gear ratios, the tires and the spoilers. Although lacking the online multiplayer mode, Need for Speed II features a split-screen playing mode for two players. Found for a very reasonable price, this game is definitely worth a chance.
