It became the first game in the series to not be developed by Bugbear Entertainment. Additionally, the game was not published for retail distribution. The game received generally negative response from the critic at several of the reviewing websites. Game Spot gave the game a rating of 5 out of a possible 10 whereas Steam rated the game with a meager score of 2/10. PC Advisor gave it a rating of 3 out of 10. The aggregate score garnered by the game at Metacritic added up to be 23 out of a hundred. The reason for this low rating was the small budget spent on the physics engine used in the game. Another fall out proved to be the glitches and hiccups in the game play. The fans of the FlatOut series cited the reason as the change of the developing companies, while comparing this installment to the previous ones. After the game ‘Kabuki Warriors’, the FlatOut 3: Chaos & Destruction is the only game in the history of Edge spanning 18 years to receive a score of ‘1’.
A total of 47 different vehicles are showcased throughout the game play. These include muscle cars, tanks, bulldozers, and monster trucks among others. 9 different game modes are available for the players to choose from. There are Destruction Derbies where 24 players compete. A total of 20 different characters are at the disposal of the players. The game play does not involve a story and comprises of just old-fashioned arcade style racing. Cars and tracks have to be unlocked in order to pursue progress in the game. The vehicles available are not very compatible with the tracks and result in either difficulty in controlling or heightened probability of car explosion. A total of 15 rivals are there in the single player games. Tuning the cars does not yield too much enhancement. While the game is jam-packed with destruction, there is just too much of it when one is focusing on racing. This also results in a difficult competition.

The physics model of the FlatOut 3 is designed in such a way so as to give the most realistic simulation of the behavior of the vehicle and its surroundings in the scenario of an accident. Over 20,000 interactive objects are present on every track which can suffer destruction upon a harrowing stimulus. While this feeds the chaos and destruction element of the game, it also ensures damage even at the slightest touch. This is a problem especially when one just wants to experience the arcade side of the game. A total of 62 tracks are featured in the game which vary in terms of terrain. 3 stunt environments are also showcased in the game. In addition to these, there are 9 environments for Destruction Derby Battles to take place in. The new addition to the game comprises of the Night-Shift mode, the Off-road mode, the Monster truck mode and the Speed mode. The off-road mode guarantees complete chaos as more objects come into interaction and the damage done to the vehicle becomes more pronounced. The Monster Truck mode also ensures a ton of debris and wreckage as the bigger vehicles get their rage on. The Night Shift mode also has its own set hurdles. Changing weather with mist, rain and thunder proves to be a definite hurdle on the road. But this also takes care of the monotony which might be experienced if the conditions remain consistent. Force feedback gives the game a better control.
The number of multiplayer competitors supported in the game can be up to 16 in total. There are 8 multiplayer game modes to choose from. While the game may not prove to be the most honest one in terms of the simulation of the natural laws of physics, it does provide one with an engaging game play.
