The physics engine used in the game is the Reflections Engine. The game was positively reviewed by the critics at several gaming websites. The game play starts with the protagonist, John Tanner in a coma. The plot of the game takes supernatural turns as Tanner gets the ability to ‘Shift’ into the bodies of others while chasing the criminal mastermind, Jericho. Shifting can be done with just a few button presses and gives one the ability to float in the air. While having the bird-eye view of the roads, the player can get in any car of his choice by highlighting the car with some particular buttons. All of the main mission follow a story line that is either related to the main plot of the game or is independent of it and features ordinary citizens. Competing these missions result in rewards like will power points and the unlocking of missions related to Tanner. These missions reveal Tanner and Jericho’s history. The will power points can be used to buy vehicles, all of which are licensed. The array of featured vehicles which exceed 100 in terms of number carries slow cars and super cars alike with cars like Zondas, Fiat 500s, Land Rovers, Baja Bugs and Ford GTs. Cars can be unlocked by completing missions or buying garages. The bought garages also yield to extra missions. Tokens can be collected from around San Francisco which give way to missions based on movies. However, one’s ability to shift and boost can no longer be used in the movie missions.

There is a multitude of different missions for the player to choose from. The racing missions are further divided into types. There’s the Checkpoint race in which the player has to get from one point to other in a limited time. The Smash race requires one to smash into objects to gain time. The team race involves shifting between two races to ensure that they take the top two positions during the competition. There are also police missions in which one has to ram on to the criminals. The Stunt missions demand one to be a daredevil and perform feats like drifting, handbrake turns and huge jumps over vehicles in motion.

The game not only features single player mode, but also showcases split screen mode and online multiplayer mode. There are a total of 6 mutliplayer types included in the game. There are co-op missions in which the players have to play as a team to take down rivals or flee from the cops. These missions are called ‘Clean the Streets’ and ‘Freedrive mode’. There are also ‘Trailblazer; and ‘Tag’ games available for the users to play. There’s also a modified version of competitive tag which particularly makes use of the ability to Shift into cars.
