This is an open world racing simulation game which was developed by Criterion Games and published by Electronic Arts. It supports the platforms of PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows. It is the first game in the series to be released for PC. It was released initially on Februrary 5, 2009 for the PC and the PlayStation version. Later, on August 11, 2009, the game was released for Xbox. What is different in this installment is that it includes all of the Downloadable Content Packages along with the original Burnout Paradise game. Upon its release, a demo of the game was made available on the official websites of Criterion Games and Electronic Arts. The demo version allows one to play for a 15 minute time period. In this demo version, the whole of the Paradise City is available for wandering. The first car to be driven in the game is the Hunter Cavalry. The cars which succeed this vehicle are Hunter Mesquite and Nakamura SI-7. The physics engine used in the game is called ‘RenderWare’.
Set in the fictional city called ‘Paradise’, the game features an open-world, giving the players the freedom to roam freely. Although the players can choose their own path, they have to keep moving in the right direction in order not to deviate from the path. This featured city showcases several different terrains with varying population density. The previous version of the game did not include day and night cycles but the software ‘Davis’ made it so. The transition from playing offline in the single player mode to playing online with several other players takes very little time. The options to either play already existing games or design a new one, are both present for the player to choose from. A new feature is also available in the game which lets the players take mugshots of their online rivals through their webcams. The online multiplayer mode allows the player to start a ‘Freeburn Challenge’. This allows the players to have 50 different challenges for every number of multiplayers(Up to 8 multiplayers are supported). The in-game tutorials help one understand the event types and the basic mechanics.

The game has several modes that the players can choose to play from. ‘Time Trials’ let the player make the best time possible to race from one point to another. The ‘Showtime Events’ consist of a player bouncing his car around in an accident for the longest time possible. This mode rewards the player for wrecking as much havoc as possible. It is a replacement for the ‘Crash mode’ featured in the previous installments. Not all of these events are available at the start of the game. A number of these have to be unlocked by completing various challenges. A number of race types are present in the game including Standard Races, Road Rage Events, Stunt Races, Marked Man races and Burning Routes. The car’s damage system is more enhanced than the previous versions.

Almost 75 cars are featured in the game. These cars are subdivided into the categories of Stunt, Speed, or Aggression. The Stunt cars are perfect for jumps and stunts while the Speed cars are suitable for cruising. The Aggression cars, as the name suggests, are aggressive and bulky in built. Upon getting the license, the player gets a car from the junkyard to drive around. The cars present in the game have to be unlocked to be driven; these unlocked cars have to be taken down first. At one time, there are 5 or 6 target cars present around for one to take down. A feature of the game which might be considered a downside to the game play is that upon losing a game, the players have to drive all the way to the starting point in order to start a new game.
The additional content featured in the PC version comprises of the Motion Blur feature for the 3rd person camera, increased texture detail, SSAO Lighting effect, support for resolution 1280×720, support for more than one monitor and advanced self-shadowing textures among other additions.
With a special song called ‘Paradise City’ from Guns N’ Roses, the game features a brilliant soundtrack.
